From 1973 through 2002 he taught and conducted research at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Between 2009 till 2014 he was a founding member of the International Water Association (IWA) Cities of Future Committee. He received two Fulbright Scholar (Italy, Czechia) Awards and was elected a member of The International Water Academy (Oslo, Norway). He is now a parttime partner in AquaNova LLC. He was was a visiting professor at the University of Venice, University of Padova and Pavia in Italy, Capital Normal University (Beijing, China) and Beijing University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and University of Chemical Technology in Prague (Czech Republic).He received his undergraduate and graduate degree from the University of Brno in former Czechoslovakia and PhD degree in environmental and water resources engineering from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN (USA).<\/p>\n<p>In 1991 Dr. Novotny founded the Specialist Group on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication of International Water Association (IWA) for which he received from IWA the Sam Jenkins Medal award in 2002. Diffuse (nonpoint) pollution and water quality have been cornerstones of his research and publishing for forty years and he published in this field ten books and more than 1750 peer reviewed journal and conference proceedings articles and book chapters.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006 he organized a workshop on Cities of the Future which was held at the F.L. Wright built Wingspread Conference Center and was attended by leading experts from several countries.\u00a0 Cities of the Future is now an acronym for a worldwide movement of water specialists, landscape architects, urban planners and NGOs towards a paradigm change, resulting in planning, building and retrofitting\u00a0 urban areas that would reduce water use, restore and protect water resources, and use energy without adversely contributing to the global climatic changes. He published four books and made numerous keynote presentations on this 21<sup>st<\/sup> century defining topic in China, Japan, Democratic Korea, Europe, Canada, Czech Republic, Belgium, Italy and the US. In 2012 was selected by the US Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists to present endowed Kappe lectures on urban decarbonization and Cities of the Future at 10 American universities. This paper addresses the critical challenges faced in traditional well monitoring practices and proposes modern solutions to enhance personnel safety and environmental protection.<br \/>\n<strong>Challenge: Annuli Connection To SCADA<\/strong> &#8211; Traditionally, big bore wells were designed with only TCA (Tubing-Casing Annuli), CCA1 (Casing-Casing Annuli), and CCA2 connected to SCADA systems for continuous pressure monitoring, based on the assumption that no pressure would be anticipated beyond CCA-2. However, current operations have revealed that CCA-3 also experiences pressure build-up, necessitating close monitoring. The existing practice involves daily physical inspections of CCA-3, which requires personnel to travel to hazardous offshore locations. This exposes operators to potential H2S risks at wellhead platforms and the dangers associated with traveling to and from offshore sites.<br \/>\n<strong>Challenge: Wireless Pressure on Top of X-Mass Tree<\/strong> &#8211; In typical production gas well designs, there is no pressure transmitter installed on top of the crown valve. This lack of monitoring can result in undetected overpressure scenarios, leading to gas leaks into the atmosphere through passing crown valves, posing significant safety risks. Currently, operators must conduct daily rounds at each wellsite to obtain pressure readings from local gauges. This practice not only exposes operators to potential H2S risks at well sites but also to off-road traveling hazards at onshore well sites.<br \/>\n<strong>Solution:<\/strong> The installations of wireless pressure transmitters on top of the well crown valves and pressure transmitters at both CCA-3 and CCA-4 provide a continuous monitoring solution, thereby eliminating the need for daily operator rounds to the well sites. This significantly reduces exposure to risks associated with off-road driving and hazardous areas. While numerous models have been developed to predict soiling losses, most are calibrated for arid or semi-arid climates and do not accurately reflect the conditions in tropical sub-humid regions. In Ghana, and particularly in the city of Kumasi, the unique combination of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and locally generated aerosols from biomass burning and urban emissions results in soiling patterns that diverge markedly from those assumed in conventional models. This disconnect presents a critical challenge for reliable energy yield forecasting and operational planning of PV systems in the region. <\/p>\n<p>This study addresses the gap by developing a predictive model specifically adapted to Kumasi\u2019s climatic and environmental conditions. Field experiments were conducted over a 12-month period using PV modules exposed to natural weathering. Optical transmittance measurements were used to quantify soiling losses, while corresponding meteorological data\u2014including rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and aerosol optical depth\u2014were collected using both ground-based and satellite sources. Advanced statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms, including multivariate regression and random forest regression, were employed to identify key predictors and construct a robust model capable of forecasting soiling rates and associated energy losses.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary findings indicate that dry spell duration, relative humidity, and aerosol concentration are the dominant climatic variables influencing soiling accumulation in Kumasi. Unlike in arid regions where wind-driven dust predominates, localized emissions from biomass and vehicular sources play a significant role.
