Dr. R.H. Richharia, a renowned rice scientist, have documented indigenous technical knowledges (ITKs) regarding the medicinal uses of selected traditional rice varieties of the collection. Validation of these ITKs is essential for the implementation of rice based therapeutic applications \u201cRice Therapy\u201d, a concept proposed by Dr. R.H. Richharia.<\/p>\n<p>Under joint collaboration of IGKV and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (BARC), efforts were made to validate medicinal properties of some of these traditional varieties through scientific research. Sanjeevani Rice, a pureline selection of germplasm accession of IGKV, Raipur, upon consumption of its brown rice exhibited immune boosting activity through enhancing the clearance of bacteria and dead cells by a type of immune cells called macrophages. The LCMS studies on Sanjeevani brown rice showed seven known Nrf2 activator -Trysol, DL-Carnitine, Coumarin, Arachidonic acid, 4- Coumaric acid, Adenosine, Vanillin, which activate the Nrf2 pathway exhibiting the immune boosting property. Methanolic Gathuwan Brown Rice Extract, an indigenous rice variety of Chhattisgarh, exhibited T-cell activation, proliferation and cytokine secretion (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6 and IFN-\u03b3). Gathuwan suppressed T-cell-mediated immune responses by altering the cellular redox balance and activating the Nrf2 signalling pathway. Maharaji rice, an aromatic variety studied using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCTMS) analysis exhibited various bioactive compounds including terpenes, flavonoids, and amino acids exhibiting exhibited potent radical scavenging activity. Methanolic brown rice extract of Gudma Dhan exhibited potent antioxidant properties and showed anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the secretion of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and IFN-\u03b3 cytokines in lymphocytes and the secretion of nitric oxide, IL-1\u03b2, TNF-\u03b1, and IL-6 cytokines in macrophages. The mutant variety of the same exhibited similar bioactive efficacy as the parent variety, indicating non-significant metabolomic diversification due to mutation breeding. Gudma Dhan and its mutant possessed abundant bioactive metabolites and exhibited potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties compared to non-pigmented brown rice extract.<\/p>\n<p>Keywords: Medicinal Rice, LCMS, Nrf2 Activators, Chhattisgarh germplasm, Indigenous technical knowledge (ITK).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biography<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. Deepak Sharma is working as Head of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, IGKV, Raipur. He got his under graduate degree in Biology form Jabalpur University in 1982. He obtained his post-graduate and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur during 1985 and 1998. Dr. Sharma had joined the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of IGKV as Assistant Professor in 1996 and became Head of the Department in 2021. He has more than 35 years of experience in research\/academia in the field of agricultural sciences\/plant breeding\/crop improvement. Dr. Sharma had handled 14 national and international funded projects on crop improvement. During this time, as the main breeder, he has developed two rice hybrids viz, &#8220;Indira Sona&#8221; and &#8220;Chhattisgarh Hybrid Rice-2&#8221;; one aromatic, nutritive and red rice variety suitable for poha &#8220;Chhattisgarh Dhan Barhasal Sel-1&#8221;; six high yielding rice mutant varieties viz, TCDM-1, Vikram-TCR, CGJT, TCVM, TCSM, Bauna Luchai CTLM; and India&#8217;s first rice variety with medicinal properties &#8220;Sanjeevani Rice&#8221;. Additionally, he has also contributed to the development of 15 rice varieties as supporting breeder and team member.<\/p>\n<p>He has worked as nodal officer of PPV&amp;FRA for conservation and utilization of crop biodiversity, during which he has facilitated the submission of 1868 farmers&#8217; varieties applications for registration under PPV&amp;FRA. PGRs encompass phytohormones, their precursors, analogs, and substances that modulate hormone biosynthesis, inactivation, translocation, or signaling pathways (Rademacher, 2015). Our previous study fully described an efficient plant regeneration protocol of date palm via somatic embryogenic suspension cultures starting from shoot tip explants to plants acclimatization (Abohatem et al., 2017). In the current study, the growth stages of embryogenic cell suspension cultures of date palm are described. The detailed morphological observations have revealed that the cells of suspension cultures divided actively and formed large spherical embryos (globular stage) within 2th and 3th week, the globular embryos start to conversion to elongated embryos in the 3th week and continues until to 5th week, the cotyledonary embryos formed within the 5th and 6th week.<\/p>\n<p>Cell suspension cultures is the most promising method for produce commercially bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds of high antioxidant value, which possess anticancer properties and to prevent cardiovascular diseases. To increase the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds on the large-scale using elicitors in cell suspension cultures, we studied the effect of activated charcoal and subculture rates on phenolics accumulation in date palm somatic embryogenic suspension cultures. \u00a0Addition of activated charcoal at 0.15% improved growth rate of somatic embryos and decreased phenolics accumulation and peroxidase activity, whereas the culture medium without charcoal has significantly increased phenolics accumulation and peroxidase activity in comparison with medium with charcoal. The high rate of subcultures every 7 days showed a substantial increase in the proliferation of embryogenic cells and reduction of tissue\/cell oxidative browning, which associated with low phenolics content and peroxidase activity. The low rate of subcultures every 15 or 20 days showed a significant increase in the phenolics content and peroxidase activity in plant tissue led to an enhancement of tissues\/cells browning and then a decreased in the proliferation of embryogenic cells. These results will contribute to a reliable protocol for the commercial production of phenolic compounds that are the basic materials for several pharma and food industries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biography<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dr. Mansour A. The increasing demand for reduced agrochemical inputs and the mitigation of herbicide resistance in weeds have intensified interest in sustainable weed management strategies. PDT operates by activating a light-sensitive molecule, known as a photosensitizer (PS), using specific wavelengths of light or sunlight. Upon activation, the PS generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), including singlet oxygen and free radicals, which induce oxidative damage in nearby biological structures. This localized oxidative stress can selectively target specific cells, tissues, or organisms while minimizing broader environmental impact.<br \/>\nIn the present study, the effects of PDT mediated by a tetrapyrrole-based photosensitizer were systematically investigated in two economically important cereal crops, wheat (<em>Triticum aestivum)<\/em> and barley (<em>Hordeum vulgare<\/em>) as well as in two widespread and problematic dicot weed species, black nightshade (<em>Solanum nigrum<\/em>) and chickweed (<em>Stellaria media<\/em>).<br \/>\nAll plant species were cultivated under controlled <em>in vitro<\/em> conditions. Following exposure to the photosensitizer and a 16-hour photoperiod, both weed species exhibited pronounced sensitivity to PDT, characterized by systemic tissue damage, growth inhibition, and eventual plant death. In contrast, wheat and barley displayed only minor and highly localized effects, primarily restricted to the points of direct photosensitizer contact.<br \/>\nDifferential plant responses were further characterized through comprehensive phenotypic, histochemical and biochemical analyses. Measurements of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant response assays indicated species specific defense capacities against ROS induced stress. These visual traits, primarily governed by anthocyanins and carotenoids, are not only attractive to consumers but are also important indicators of antioxidant content and nutritional quality. Despite their significance, the genetic regulation underlying pigment biosynthesis in sweet potato remains insufficiently characterized, largely due to the absence of an integrative genetic resource that connects multi-layered molecular data with phenotypic traits. To address this gap, we developed a comprehensive systems biology pipeline that integrates omics and non-omics data through a multi-layer feature engineering approach. Specifically, we collected and harmonized a dataset comprising 104,533 entries, including 95 genomic variants (e.g., SNPs, SSRs, QTLs), 103,561 transcriptomic profiles (including 3 RNA-level omics data), 175 protein-level data, and 702 functional annotations related to pigment biosynthesis. These molecular features were further linked to phenotypic observations and experimental metadata from diverse sweet potato accessions. Comparative annotation using Arabidopsis thaliana and other model plants enabled cross-species functional inference and ontology mapping, strengthening the interpretability of the integrated dataset. To prioritize candidate genes, we implemented a random forest algorithm for trait-associated feature selection. This non-parametric model ranked features based on<\/p>\n<p>their relevance to pigment traits such as flesh and skin coloration. Pathways related to anthocyanin and carotenoid metabolism were consistently enriched among top-ranked genes, indicating their potential regulatory role in pigment differentiation. Ultimately, this study presents a scalable and interpretable feature-ranking framework for the discovery of pigment-related genes in sweet potato. The platform serves as a valuable reference for breeders seeking to enhance color traits via molecular-assisted selection, and sets the stage for future work on integrating additional omics layers such as metabolomics or epigenomics. In this study, we assembled and analyzed a large-scale SNP dataset consisting of 1,502 accessions genotyped at 11,184 loci to investigate population structure, assess genomic diversity, and construct an optimized core germplasm collection. To ensure high data quality, stringent filtering procedures were applied to remove SNP markers with more than 5% missingness, abnormal minor allele frequency values, or heterozygosity rates outside biologically plausible bounds. After quality control, a final dataset of 9715 high-confidence SNPs was retained for downstream analyses. Principal component analysis revealed a highly complex and continuous pattern of genomic variation, with the first 15 principal components each explaining less than 1% of total variance. More than 500 principal components were required to capture 75% of the cumulative variance, indicating the absence of sharply defined subpopulations and suggesting extensive admixture and long-term gene flow within the germplasm collection. This multidimensional diversity highlights both the breeding potential and the challenges<\/p>\n<p>associated with managing large sweet potato genetic repositories. Leveraging this genomic dataset, we constructed a core collection using a modified GenoCore algorithm to maximize allelic coverage while minimizing sample number. The resulting core set consists of 33 accessions, representing only 2.2% of the total collection yet capturing 95.06% of overall genomic diversity. Notably, the six most informative accessions alone represent over 78% of cumulative allelic variation, underscoring their importance as genetic reservoirs. The established core collection provides a powerful, resource-efficient subset for germplasm conservation, trait dissection, GWAS, genomic selection, and breeding program design. Overall, this work delivers the first large-scale, genomics-driven core germplasm framework for sweet potato, offering a strategic foundation for accelerating genetic research, enhancing breeding efficiency, and supporting long-term conservation of this globally important crop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Miss Xin-Yu Lee is an undergraduate student, under Dr. Chung-Feng Kao\u2019s supervised, in the Department of Agronomy of National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan.
